Personalities of Bagnot

Bagnot is a small city in the south-eastern most regions of Tarsh, lying precariously close to the chaos-infested Snakepipe Hollow.  It has a population of nearly 7,000 (and nearly 900 buildings) and because of its nearness to the Sartarite border is important militarily.

Long before the Lunar take-over, Bagnot had been the capital city of Tarsh.  It was famed for its great gates. Also of note was the design of the city walls. Bagnot lies on a modest hill, and the walls spiral round up the hill in a manner very similar to that of a Wind Rune.  The city is divided into four sections, each section being a turn of this spiral. The first is Grainturn, where the farmers and labourers live.  The next is Meragturn, home to many of the cities merchants and artisans.  Further inward is Huturn, where many of the more important soldiers, adventurers and priests live.  It is also where the cities guilds have their base.  Finally the most inner turn of the spiral, leading up to Adinacil Tower, is called Silverturn. There are many gates that cut through the spiral walls, allowing some freedom of movement through these areas.

In 1448 S.T., a king of the Colymar tribe of Sartar called Intagarn stormed the great gates with an army of adventurers.  He ransacked the city and took the Ivory Throne.  To this day, great tracks can still be seen in the floor of the city's tower where the throne was dragged away.  In 1522, Furthest became the capital of Tarsh. Some sixty years later, after the Battle of Grizzly Peak, the area around Bagnot came under full Lunar control.  At that time, most of its inhabitants were put to the sword as the city had been the last outpost of the Exiles, a group of rebels who had been based around Mount Kero-Fin and had been lead by King Palashee Long-Axe.  Even now, almost forty years later, some areas of Bagnot seem quite deserted.

This document describes some of the prominent people in Bagnot around the year 1621 S.T.

The Lunar Establishment

Bagnot is now firmly under Lunar control and sits within the borders of the Glowline.  The rulers of the city are generally native Tarshites, converted to the Lunar ways.

Duke Adinacil - Ruler of Bagnot

Sword Rune Lord of Yanafil Tarnils.  His ancestry is that of a rich merchant family that had been of the Issaries faith before the Lunar invasion.  Adinacil was an eager convert to the Lunar way.  He is a cold, ruthless man.  He seeks to imitate Lunar fashions and flatters any Imperial officials that come to Bagnot.  He is given to secretive pondering of plans.  He lives in Adinacil Tower, the black stone building that shoots up from the centre of the city.  He is little bothered by Tarsh's monarch, King Pharandros, as Bagnot is in many ways quite isolated from the other lands of Tarsh.  However, Duke Adinacil is still a supporter of the king because of the recent additions to his Tarshite province of the northern Satari lands including the northern Homeward Marches (an area of grassland south of Snakepipe Hollow).

Count Elosteras - Imperial Advisor

Priest of Etyries.  He is the liason with the Provincial Government in Mirin's Cross.  He knows of the approach of Gordius Silverus, Chief of Barbarian Affairs and the Detachable Right Hand of Fazzur Wideread and seeks to get Bagnot prepared for this.  At present he is particularly ingratiating to Count Julan, a Lunar Coder visiting the city before travelling on to the Temple of the Reaching Moon.  He is cunning and could be described variously as "slick", "wily" and "smarmy". Despite the teachings of the Lunar faith, he has a revulsion of non-human sentient beings which he hides.  His hair is black, curly and usually greasy.  Despite apparent patience with inferiors, he is in reality merciless to those who fail him.  He resides in Adinacil Tower normally but has a private home in Silverturn.

Varnzal the Insistent - Chief of Taxes

Director of the Department of Tax Levying and Licensing.  Grim and foreboding in financial and political matters yet in matters of the flesh quite gullible.  In matters of the heart he has been even more foolish.  This is one way in which he could be made a liability to the establishment.  He is a prominent initiate of Yelmalio.

Partol Erom - High Priest of Irripi Ontor and Chief Astrologer

He has a great deal of personal influence over Duke Adinacil.  He has a superstitious and overriding faith in his astrological predictions (though these generally do come true).  His sense of morality has been unhinged by to much reliance on these.  If his predictions became too embarassing for the rulers of Bagnot, he could become a target for Malaklaw the Assasin.

Felicitus of the Heartland - Lunar playboy

On tour of the Empire but has temporarily run out of money.  Hence he is unwillingly stuck in Bagnot, though he tells everyone he enjoys it here.  Because of his noble birth (being born in Alkoth), his influence is greater than his wealth.  However, he is easily bought and has little loyalty to any particular side in an argument (unless it threatens him in some way).  This is because he finds most of the people in Bagnot to be boring barbarians and cares little for what they really think of him.  He is overweight and wears a white toga with a gold waistband.  He is a somewhat lazy initiate of the Red Goddess.

Constable Decrotas - Head of Bagnot Constabulary

He is in charge of enforcing domestic law in Bagnot.  Priest of Irripi Ontor and is noted for his obsessive observance of Lunar law, even if it is damaging to the interests of the establishment.  Uttery despised by Duke Adinacil and his court.

Constable Theracin - Deputy to Constable Decrotas

Light Son of Yelmalio.  He too is as stiff as a board and is the best of friends with Decrotas, his superior.  His appointment was partly to engender support from the large Yelmalion minority in Bagnot.

Luxenela Moonclay - High Priestess of Ernalda

Illuminated, and also rumoured to be Duke Adinacil's lover though there has been no official comment to this effect.

Angramol - Chief of Market Administration

Priest of Etyries.  All applications for trading and stalls in Bagnot eventually go through him.  Originally from Slavewall and knows all about the slave trade.

Makal Urblessed - Leader of Merchantman's Guild

Illuminated High Priest of Etyries.  Originally from Notchet and is the brother of the famous Lokarnos merchant and part-time adventurer, Aslak Solazar. Highly intelligent with a noble disposition.  He has a pet miniature griffin called "Silvoson" (this is his allied spirit and its SIZ has been Tapped).  His illumination allows him to see beyond any religious, political etc. divisions and he has a very egalitarian attitude.

Ventucha - Military Engineer

Currently working on siege engines for the Imperial Army; he knows secrets about their planned attack on Whitewall during Dark Season of 1621 S.T.  (he also knows about the coming of the Crimson Bat).  He is boorish in manner and has pock-marked skin.  Priest of Irripi Ontor.

Other Notables in Bagnot

Barlatran - Head of Farmer's Guild

Priest of Barntar and a very influential non-Lunar voice in Bagnot.  The most important person not to be directly tied into the Lunar establishment.

Artros Scargild - Ex-leader of Miner's Guild

Priest of Argan Argar and initiate of Ernalda.  The Miner's Guild is now defunct due to the abandonment of the mines south of Bagnot.  Thus his position is now obsolete and he is in fact quite poor.  He resents all this and is bitter about the loss of the good, happy life he and his followers once had.  He has grown to blame the Lunar conquest of Tarsh for this.  He believes everything he once stood for is lost.  All this said, he is still of some importance in Bagnot politics and many sympathize with him secretly. He has detailed maps of all the mines south of Bagnot, as well as the sewers and other tunnels under the city itself.  With those who know him he has a markedly mischevious sense of humour.  He now wishes to pursue his commitment to the Ernaldan faith, but knows this is limited due to his sex. He dislikes Luxenela Moonclay intensely.

Engallok - Chief Baker

With bakery being one of the two main economic activities of Bagnot, this is indeed an important and influential position.  He is a priest of Barntar and is good friends with Barlatran.  He has voiced muted opposition tosome of Duke Adinacil's more Lunar-inspired rulings.

Old Baraglar - Tarsh Exiles Veteran

Ex-Storm Buller now retired due to both arms being dismembered by a broo from Snakepipe Hollow.  He somehow managed to avoid being slaughtered by the Lunar Army after it invaded.  He has a million stories of Lunar atrocities and harks on about Palashee Long-Axe.  However, he is looked on as an idiot by the authorities who take no notice of him.  He survives only through the kindness of others.

Allansdropa Vicemind - Priestess of Lhankor Mhy

Lawyer for hire.  Gets her surname from the surety of her memory NOT what she likes to indulge in.  However, she secretly often frequents Lalaela's to see the Ulerian love-husbands, though she still insists that she is "on business".  She is sharp-tounged, sensual and lusty in her desires.  She can be quite irritable and is also (unknown to her) suffering from mild zombieism.

Prince Karlestra - Visitng Grazelander Noble

Rune-lord of Yu-kargzant.  Touring Tarsh at the command of the Grazelander king, Jarsandron Tenherds, his father.  He is a very exotic appearing person in comparison to the citizens of Bagnot.  He is totally out of his depth in any Imperial politicking.

Mikhail Baron - Lhankor Mhy priest

He is seeking fossils from Snakepipe Hollow but will not actually go there himself.  Poor rates of pay for this.

Stulat the Charterer - Irripi Ontor priest

He wishes to start a research expedition into Sartar and is seeking armed bodyguards.  He is offering very good rates of pay for this.

Cwinnor - Priest of Donandar

The most famous poet in Bagnot.  He is pretentious and leads a bohemian lifestyle.  However, his poetry and songs are extremely good and he owns one of the finest and liveliest inns in Bagnot, called Seven Crowns for Cwinnor.

Anti-Establishment Figures in Bagnot

Wenallok The Nercomancer - Vivamorti Cultist

This vampyre was once brother to Engallok, chief baker.  Outwardly he poses as a retired Tarsh noble.  He sporadically raids the Dreadenarium (the large graveyard created after the slaughter of Bagnot in 1582) for corpses.  Some of these he has turned into zombie slaves he keeps in his cellar.  However, some of the materials he uses in these spells have been secretly deposited in Engallok's grain supplies.  As Engallok's grain is used in the most popular brand of bread in Bagnot, this material has been eaten by a sizeable portion of Bagnot's population.  Unfortunately this can have the side-effect of infecting any who consume the bread with a zombiesque disease.  This curse is currently sweeping Bagnot.  He is a priest of Vivamort and an initiate of Mallia.  He has a krashtkid (hidden in a tunnel lair under his house) for an allied spirit.

Galegrim Godgrain - Sartarite Rebel

Outwardly, this man poses as a farmer's agent and priest of Barntar.  Secretly, he is a member of the Cold Wind resistance movement.  However, he has done very little in practical terms to this end.  He does not know of the Heorti resistance movement, called the Rune Wolf.  His real name is Lazutan Ingranson, but he changed it to sound a bit more heroic.
